Scramble for High School Graduates

Saturday, July 10 Somali students who graduated from the local high schools received plenty of choices to make decision on whose invitations they should be responding to. “I got two graduation invitations and thinking about which one to go to, actually took the fun off from this important day. Why didn’t each took one day of the weekend, we will have sure fill them with our presence, and would have had weekend full of fun” A young graduate looked askance at me whiling she was asking that question.

Somalis in Ohio decided to do something that was long overdue which was to organize graduation events for graduates, where they would be congratulating, advising and encouraging high school graduates to go to college. The young graduates also received mentorship to better understand tedious process of filling out FAFSA forms, and the process of deciding which major to study or college to go to.

Mohamed Suleiman (Macalin Adan) who is North America Somali Student Union (NASSU) President, said,  “If there is something called a better tomorrow or future or there is some ways to make yourself a better person, the only tools to achieve both is education”. It does not matter which events they attended, what really matters is Somali high school graduates were getting the chance to be honored and recognized for their four years of hard work. Macalin Aden argued that this day is Somali High school graduates day, and it is their choice-where to attend. We are glad they are enjoying themselves.

Both of the events were impeccably without flaws yet the visible fault yield by the exclamation mark hanged over everyone’s head, what would it have become, how grand and great, if the two great organizing team join in hand? One word worth to be introduced to both team is “synergy”-it is never less rather it is more people achieve if they join their forces together.  Politics aside, congratulations they said in unison to the Somali High School graduates.
